Moving Day Checklist: 17 Top Things to Keep in Mind for a Smooth Transition

Thinking about relocating to a new location in Chennai? There are tons of things that you need to manage when you move. This is why there arises a need to hire professional packers and movers in Chennai. Apart from that, there are a few tips that you must keep in mind when you are shifting. Keep on reading to explore them in detail.

1. Get rid of the non-essential items

To start with the packing process of your house, you must keep in mind that you need to get rid of the clutter first. Things that are not useful to you anymore and you are not taking them along can be either discarded or sold/donated. Minimize the items as much as you can.

2. Pack your essential items separately

You must have a lot of essential items with you to take along including basic toiletries, a few pairs of clothes for change, snacks, essential documents, valuable items, prescribed medicines, and others. These are the items that you would need at any point of the move and thus, you must keep the bag along with you and not with the movers.

3. Label all your boxes properly

You must label all your boxes properly because it helps in easy handling and unpacking of the items. If the items are fragile, then you must mention some instructions or caution words like “fragile” “breakables” “this side up”, etc., on the top of the box. You can add details including mentioning the contents of the box and the room to which it belongs. Make sure to mention the details at the top and on at least two sides of the boxes. So, never skip labeling the boxes.

4. Pack snacks and beverages

You should pack some beverages and snacks for the move as it is highly required. You and your kids might feel hungry or thirsty during the move. Packing these things along will help you avoid stopping again and again at different stores to buy something or the other. You will be able to avoid waste of time by packing them beforehand.

5. Become an early bird

You must get up early on the moving day as it will help you handle the moving task easily and you will wrap up the relocation process quickly and conveniently. During summers, it is always better to relocate in the morning time as the weather remains pleasant and there remains less heat.

6. Keep your cellphone charged

Make sure to keep your cellphone fully charged so that it will not get switched off on the moving day. You might need to make a few calls and this is why you must charge it a night before to avoid any issue on the shifting day. Do keep the charger in your essentials bag so that you can charge your phone in case the battery dies.

7. Do create a checklist and an inventory list

You must prepare a checklist of all the things that you need to do before the move. This will help you remember all the tasks. Also, prepare an inventory list including all the items that you are relocating. This will aid you in keeping track of the items.

8. Pack the cleaning supplies

You must pack a few cleaning supplies along with you so that you can use them for cleaning your new home if in case it is not appropriately cleaned. Make a separate box for keeping the cleaning supplies and keep it along with you. It would be better if you only keep the unopened items with you.

9. Arrange utilities

Get the old utilities either disconnected or transferred to your new home. If they are unable to transfer, then make sure to get your basic utilities installed in your new home including electricity, water, gas, internet, etc.

10. Pack a first-aid kit

You must keep a first-aid kit along with you as anything can happen at any time during the move. Keep some of the general medicines for stomach aches, fever, nausea, headache, etc., along with a few bandages and antiseptic.

11. Dress yourself aptly

It is important to wear only comfortable clothes on the moving day. Make sure to wear loose-fitted cotton clothes with a pair of anti-skid sneakers if you are moving in the summer season. Don’t wear open-toe or heels as they might lead you to injury. In the winter season, you must put on a jacket, sweater, gloves, socks, muffler, socks, shoes, etc., as per your comfort.

12. Arrange packing supplies

You can arrange the packing supplies by getting boxes from some retail stores. Also, you can make use of the things that are available at home like garbage bags, old clothes, towels, linens, etc.

13. Pack a cooler

If you are moving during summer, then you must pack a cooler and keep a few bottles of juices, energy drinks, water, and other beverages of your choice.

14. Be available during packing and pick-up

You must stay along with the moving team during the packing and loading of all the items. You can guide them properly as to how you want everything to be handled and loaded.

15. Keep kids and pets in a safe place

Make sure to keep your kids and pets safe. Allot them a separate room where they can play and engage themselves. Arrange a baby or pet sitter if you can’t take care of them on the moving day.

16. Ensure that the parking space is available

It would be better if you arranged the parking space in advance for the movers. If there is any booking that you need to make beforehand, then do it to avoid any issues on the relocation day.

17. Hire your movers in advance

If you have decided to relocate with the help of the movers and packers in Chennai, then hire them in advance as during the peak season, you will have to face unavailability issues.
